Marketplace Health Insurance and Tax Season: Understanding Your 1095-A

Form 1095-A Health Insurance Marketplace Statement.

IRS.gov

If you purchased health coverage through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, you probably received a Form 1095-A in the mail sometime before February 1. This document is a crucial part of completing your 2024 tax return, so here’s what you need to know before the April 15, 2025 tax deadline.

Note: The IRS extended tax deadlines to May 1, 2025 for the following states affected by 2024 natural disasters: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Mexico, and certain counties in Alaska, Tennessee, and Virginia.

What is a Form 1095-A?

If you or anyone in your household enrolled in a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you should have received a Form 1095-A, also called a Health Insurance Marketplace Statement. It’s important to note that Marketplace will you send this form, not the IRS.

What’s on a Form 1095-A?

Your 1095-A shows the dates of coverage, total amount of the monthly premiums for your plan, the second-lowest cost silver plan premium that you may use to determine the amount of your premium tax credit, and amounts of advance payments of the premium tax credit.

Why is this form important?

You’ll use the information on your 1095-A to calculate the amount of your premium tax credit. You will also use this form to reconcile advance payments of the premium tax credit made on your behalf with the premium tax credit you are claiming on your tax return. For this, you’ll use Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit, which you will file with your tax return.

What if I didn’t receive my form?

If you didn’t already get your 1095-A form by mail, you can use your healthcare.gov account to get an online copy. If you received a form but it’s incorrect, you’ll need to contact the Marketplace where you purchased coverage to request a corrected form.

Be aware that if you did not purchase your coverage through the Marketplace, including Medicaid or CHIP coverage, you will not receive a 1095-A. If your household received multiple 1095-As, you probably have different household members on different plans. Be sure to check your documents carefully.
