Health Insurance Plans Without Employer Coverage

Without Employer CoverageNot all employers offer employer coverage, and even if they do, the coverage may not be as good as what you’d get on your own. If you’re in this position, don’t despair. There are still plenty of ways to get health insurance.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is an option for health insurance, no matter your situation. It’s a good idea to compare the ACA plans available in your area with those offered by private insurers since they have different prices and options that might be better suited to your needs. However, ACA is based on your income, the more you make the higher the cost. This is because higher-income individuals subsidize the cost of insurance.

Private insurance is an option for health insurance, especially for higher net worth individuals and families.

Private Insurance Options Without Employer Coverage

If you don’t have employer coverage, then private insurance is an option. Private health insurance policies are not regulated by state agencies like the ACA plans are, but they can still provide comprehensive coverage at competitive prices. Depending on your situation and needs, private insurance might give you more flexibility with providers and networks than the ACA plans do. However, if you qualify for government subsidies or cost-sharing reductions under the ACA, then those may make private insurance less attractive financially.

Medicare Advantage plans, which offer all the coverage of Original Medicare plus additional benefits. Plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. You may choose to stay with Original Medicare or switch to a Medicare Advantage plan instead.

All of these options can be overwhelming. The government does a great job explaining your entitlements, but how do you know what to choose? Or worse, what if there are other options available to you that you missed in the 100s of pages of explanations?
